Haitian Handmade

If you know anything about Servants for Haiti, you know we'll do whatever it takes to help our Haitian friends.  In that spirit, we're branching out to do more. SFH is spinning off a "subsidiary" called Haitian Handmade to market and sell products created by Haitian artisans.  In the process, we'll be providing incomes for families who might otherwise not be able to raise their own children, a common occurrence and one of the reasons for the proliferation of so-called orphanages in Haiti. Read on for the whole story about Haitian Handmade... Servants for Haiti acquired 26 sewing machines and a variety of material to get the program starte...

SFH Teams: An impartial view

Usually, we post trip reports from participants on our teams.  During the summer 2013 trip, however, an EMT who was in Haiti and working with our group made the following observation about our team: Hey everybody, here is hope and reason not give up on our young people. This is a group of high school students that were in last week. Their leaders, Laurae, Doug, and Kirk told me they were workers, but me being me and a skeptic thought I will give them a few little jobs around. Man, I was wrong. These young men and young ladies worked this poor old country boy ragged. They painted the outside of the first floor. Let me tell you I have seen professi...

2013 Trivia Recap

SFH Trivia night was once more a smashing success, an annual tradition that has become a peak moment of the Merrimack Valley social calendar.  About 150 people came out to support the great work happening in Haiti with the assistance and support of Servants for Haiti. Biznis Pam was featured as the recipient of the event's income.  Two videos of Monite Métélus-Louis (viewable here and here), founder and director of the business training and micro-loan program, were shown to let people know where their giving would be working.  That set the tone for some frenzied bidding and trivia excitement. The top team walked off with ice cream cone ...

New businesses coming

Ten new businesses are in the works from the latest batch of graduates of our Biznis Pam program.  Their start-ups will be funded by loans from Servants for Haiti using your donations.  Here is a sampling of a few of them: A young woman of 29 with a 2-year-old daughter will be selling clothes and cosmetic products. A 49-year-old woman with three children will market clothing and curtains, sheets, and tablecloths. One enterprising woman (40, with two children) will be offering building materials for sale.  Certainly her products will be in great demand in a nation in great need of housing. Another of our entrepreneurs is a young pregnant ...

Third Biznis Pam class wrapping up

The third session of our Biznis Pam program is wrapping up.  Graduation from this session was held on Friday, January 18, 2013.  Participants who have successfully and diligently completed all course work and have their business plans approved will receive their loans at the start of February. The ten students were chosen by the founder and administrator of Biznis Pam, Monite Métélus-Louis based on need.  Monite commented on this group, her largest class so far, as possessing a "good sense of responsibility." That attitude bodes well for their future success.  Once they have established their businesses and repaid their loans, the money ...

The staged reading is over.  SFH raised $646 toward the loan that Jean will need for his taptap.  Thank you all for your support. Biznis Progress

Back in November, our first Biznis Pam class graduated from entrepreneurial training.  We thought you might like to know how they're doing today. Monite, our field director and trainer, sent us an update this past week.  Here's the good news: Of the five people who attended the first class, four created business plans that were approved and funded with micro-loans.  (The fifth student didn't meet all class requirements.)  All four new businesses are in operation.  Here is Monite's report on the status of each: Three of the four new businesses are growing.  One of the ladies keeps thanking us for her  loan. Another, who has been ...
